Be The Best Intern

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

There is nothing quite like the moment when you accept your first internship. It’s your first opportunity to try your skills in the “real world” and put what you have been learning in class to the test. It’s a chance to learn and hopefully make some valuable connections for the future.
Although it may seem intimidating at first, your internship is a good time to get experience in your future field and see if it’s a good fit for you. To get experience you have to be willing to take the initiative . Volunteer to help with projects, ask questions, and be willing to make mistakes –that is after all how you learn. Go after door to door sales with confidence.
Another good way to learn, and also begin networking , is by scheduling meetings with your supervisor. Ask them to evaluate you–where you are excelling and where you are struggling. You can also talk with other employees that you work with for their opinion and suggestions.
No matter what you want to enter, internships are an important part of helping you get there. An internship, be it at Vogue or Southwestern Company , shows that you have experience, initiative, responsibility and would be a good person to hire.

Internships are Great Ways to Finance Education and Maximize Time

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

One of the great ways to finance your way through college is to work. This is well understood, although so is the fact that it is extremely difficult to work full time and maintain a full time class load . This frequently leads to extended years in school and can also compromise one’s grades. However, a solid summer internship program like those offered at Southwestern Company is a great middle ground and offers students the opportunity to make money, while also enhancing their professional skills.

There are various guest home placement options so housing issues should not be a concern for the student. And businesses like Southwestern Company have a variety of companies that they work with so students are able to explore their personal and academic field interests, while also earning money. And many times, the income that is gained through the program is greater than that which will be earned during a part time summer job.

Some students are able to provide for their entire educational costs by combining whatever grant and or scholarship money they earn with participation in a summer internship program. This is an ideal situation and does not interfere with precious class or study time and makes the most productive use of summers. With difficult economic times, an internship can make the difference between being able to finance school and also in completing it in four years time.

Direct Selling Association Annual Meeting News

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

With as many door to door sales people and companies which have been under fire lately for being scammers, too harsh on workers, or otherwise bad companies it is nice to see some summertime news that the direct selling business is not only alive and kicking, but is also thriving with companies that have good intentions . There are a few companies (actually it was somewhere over 1,000 legitimate direct selling companies) that came together recently for the Direct Selling Association ‘s Annual Meeting. One of the most amazing things about this number of direct sellers coming together for a is that it shows the number of companies out there who do actually care. The Direct Selling Association is dedicated to providing a collection of direct sellers with resources that are extremely useful and in exchange all companies that become a member must abide by a set of ethics that prevent them from abusing the trust of the average person. All of those who showed up to this meeting had to be members. It really puts the few bad apples into perspective.

Some of the many guests who were there, including Southwestern Company and Avon Products, were honored for the amount of time they have been open, selling, and for their many contributions to the direct selling market. Southwestern Company may be one of the longest lived direct selling companies around having been selling products on the market for more than one hundred fifty years. With a time range like that one is almost tempted to think that they might be the original direct sellers in America. While it is a long time, there were others who were established before them, and there were probably sham companies at that time too. Many of themhad to go away as groups such as the Direct Selling Association came to be. The more information that was out there about these scams, much of which the Direct Selling Association has helped distribute, the harder it is for them to operate. That is probably one of the reasons why companies like Southwestern Company like belonging to this group so much.

The truth is that the Direct Selling Association hasn’t even been around that long compared to some of the direct selling companies that are around today. However the association was formed out of knowing that there was a market of well intentioned companies out there who could use the advantage over those who were giving the market a bad name.

They were started in 1910, so this was their one hundredth birthday. In celebration there were a number of classes and presentations on some new and important innovations in the industry. Over all the whole thing went very well and most of the members went home satisfied with some new information that will help distinguish them from other companies out there now.
